Vintage Clothing and 50s Americana

This Spring/Summer designers have taken inspiration from a more affluent era as an antidote to the current economic gloom, 50s America. Prada, Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs were just a few of the top designers to get in on the act with cinched in waists, A-line skirts and pastel tones. But this is a look that anyone can achieve by buying vintage clothing. After all, why buy a piece of retro inspired Americana when you can wear the real thing?

For an on-trend take on vintage clothing look to Muiccia Prada for inspiration and opt for cinched in waists and fun prints. Her Cadillac print dresses have proved a hit for Spring/Summer and the high street will no doubt provide us with a huge selection of cheap imitations in the coming months. And to nail two trends in one, look for pastel coloured vintage dresses or skirts in lemon yellow, damask pink or spearmint green. For an authentic take on 50s Americana, patterns of the era include gingham, bold floral print and polka dots so keep an eye out for these too.

If vintage dresses or skirts aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to channel 50s Americana. Try other vintage clothing, such as high-waisted skirts and shorts with midriff baring crop tops. Don’t be daunted by flashing your flesh! Wearing high waistbands will show off the slimmest part of your torso, giving the effect of a narrow waist and flattering your figure. Or you could even try retro inspired or vintage accessories. Cat’s eye sunglasses scream 50s Americana, and were seen on the catwalks of Bottega Veneta, Rochas and Nina Ricci to name a few. The great thing about accessories as opposed to vintage clothing is that if you lack confidence you can try out a new trend on a low budget.

So will you opt for vintage clothing or accessories for Spring/Summer or will you be buying retro inspired pieces from the high street instead?
